Jerantut Police Chief Superintendent Azid Ismail said the baby was believed to have been left by her mother, along with RM15 cash and a picture of a man with the baby.
Police found a note that said: “Take care of this child, her father died, I am Nuer Aini.“
He said the baby, wrapped in a cloth with the items, was found about 8pm by a 28-year-old plantation worker who heard a baby crying while passing by the road.
“The man then took the baby home before lodging a police report at the Jerantut police station about 4pm yesterday,” he said when contacted by Bernama here today.
Azid said initial checks by a doctor revealed that the baby was less than a month old and had scratch marks in the chest, probably caused by her own fingernails.
“The baby is now warded at the Jerantut Hospital for further checks and police have informed the district Welfare Department.”
Azid urged members of the public with information or knew the man in the picture to contact the police.
