PETALING JAYA:
A recent tweet by a sports portal about Malaysia’s national team revealed how ignorant some netizens were when it came to general knowledge and geography.

ESPC FC had last night tweeted that Khairul Fahmi, Malaysia’s first choice keeper, may not start against Timor Leste.

‘Malaysia’ in the tweet however was replaced with the icon of the ‘Jalur Gemilang.’

tcomt1The inability of some to recognise the Malaysian flag created confusion among users of the micro-blogging site which also led a few to ridicule the Malaysian flag.

One @dommm_11 tweeted: @ESPNFC @alexgar221 what f***** country is that

Another user Javier Hernandez @CHichaDios14_ replied by commenting: “It’s America but with the moon.”

Another linked the Malaysian flag to the MH17 tragedy by stating the national carrier that was shot down over Ukraine while flying to Kuala Lumpur in 2014: “Nah my son that is an airplane that crashed my son.”

One Jordon Arciba claimed that ESPN inserted a flag that no one knew as a “click bait.”

Most of the comments gathered showed that many were not able to differentiate between the American flag and that of the Jalur Gemilang, although there were those who correctly identified the latter.

The Malaysian flag shares certain traits of US’s flag, namely the red and white stripes and blue rectangle.
