Male teenager dies of suspected rat urine disease

He was admitted to hospital with heavy mouth bleeding and shortness of breath.

Nur Iman Nor Hisham, the teenager who had been admitted to the Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital (HSAH) here on suspicion of being infected with leptospirosis (rat urine disease), died about 1pm today.

The 17-year-old victim’s father Nor Hisham Doon, 46, said his son was admitted to the the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital two weeks ago.

“He had suffered heavy mouth bleeding and shortness of breath, and was also unable to speak. He passed away at 1pm today,” he told reporters,here.

Nor Hisham said the remains of his son would be buried at a Muslim cemetery near Taman Gurun Jaya, Gurun, today.

Nur Iman was said to have contracted the disease after a swim with his friends at Lata Bukit Perak, Pendang, on May 1.

The victim was first treated at a private clinic before being admitted to the Yan Hospital and referred to the HSAH on May 12 after his health condition deteriorated.
