Its Central Committee Member Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj said that the party had stated that without unity, the battle to topple BN is unlikely to yield any results.
“Three-cornered fights would be very foolish. We said don’t do three-cornered fights. If they go against our suggestion, our advice, then we are not obliged to help.
“One-to-one (fight) we have no problem,” he told a press conference at PSM headquarters today.
Jeyakumar, who is also the Sungai Siput MP, spoke of the dynamics of relationship among PAS and Amanah grassroots members in Perak, which did not exactly resonate with the leadership problems between both parties.
He said although he prefers Amanah over PAS, the latter’s grassroots members did not exactly “hate” the new party and its president Mohamad Sabu, and even acknowledged the problems related to their president Abdul Hadi Awang.
“You cannot blame PAS for Hadi’s mistake. I have many PAS friends in Sungai Siput who have been working with me since 1999 against BN.
“It is politically foolish to have a three-cornered fight and for Amanah to go against PAS,” he said.
The Sungai Siput constituency is situated right next to the Kuala Kangsar constituency and PSM’s reach to the estate workers and Indian voters there make them valuable allies to have in Perak.
Both PAS and its splinter from Pakatan Harapan, Amanah have announced their intention to contest in both the by-elections.
However, some quarters within PKR and DAP have reportedly said that PAS could take the Kuala Kangsar seat while Pakatan Harapan should contest in Sungai Besar.
Hadi had insisted that PAS will contest in both seats and planned to announce their candidate for Sungai Besar tomorrow.
