KUALA LUMPUR:
Former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad went too far with his allegations that the King and other Malay rulers were “under house arrest”, says Tunku Abdul Aziz Ibrahim.

Speaking to reporters after lodging a police report against Mahathir over the statement, the former DAP man described Mahathir’s allegations as false and mischievous.

Tunku Aziz, who is the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s advisory board chairman, clarified that he lodged the report in his personal capacity.

He said Mahathir’s statement had created confusion, suspicion and disquiet and put the peace and security of the nation at considerable risk.

“He has by his irresponsible claims, caused public disaffection and anger against an elected government, which could lead to a dangerous threat to public order,” he told reporters after lodging the report at the Dang Wangi police headquarters.

Tunku Aziz lamented the elderly statesman’s act of involving the Malay rulers in politics and partisan politics for his own political advantage.

“Mahathir’s behaviour cannot be ignored any longer and I urge the authorities to take immediate action under the law against him.”

Meanwhile, the Red Shirts Movement also lodged a separate report against Mahathir on the same issue.

The group’s chief, Ali Tinju, who was present at the same police headquarters, said Mahathir’s baseless claims were ill-intended and that he had lost all respect for the statesman.

“If he has proof, he should show it to the people and they will support him,” he said, adding that Mahathir was undoing all the good that he had done during his time as prime minister.

He also called on the authorities to take action against Mahathir.

Last week, Mahathir said he had yet to secure an audience with the King to present the signatures of those in support of the Citizens’ Declaration.

He blamed this on Prime Minister Najib Razak, and also joked that the former had placed the country and the Malay rulers under “house arrest”.
