Judge Harith Sham Mohamed Yasin imposed the fine on Yunus Hasyim Yaakub, 29, after he pleaded guilty to the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) officer Hairul Anuar Mat Nor, to the charge of using the website http://www.gazelleone.net to provide obscene materials for commercial purposes.
Yunus Hasyim committed the offence at the MCMC Network Surveillance Department, Level 6, Menara SKMM 1, Jalan Impact, Cyber 6, Cyberjaya here at 11.07am on Aug 13, 2015.
He was charged under Section 233 (2)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a maximum fine of RM50,000 or one year’s jail, or both upon conviction.
According to the facts of the case, Yunus Hasyim was found selling obscene cartoons that he produced for clients who registered on his website with a membership fee of RM30.
The clients would then be requested to purchase an online payment card, MOLPoint or Pay Pal, at any convenience store and send the pin number and the card’s serial number to the graphic artist.
The clients are then given a password to surf the website.
MCMC prosecuting officer Mohd Sophian Zakaria prosecuted, while Yunus Hasyim was not represented.
