DBKL Executive Director (Planning) Mohd Najib Mohd said these traffic disposal projects would be carried out in stages over the next six months.
“The focus will be on at least 50 main roads and exits in the city, especially Jalan Kuching, with assistance from Pasukan Petugas Khas Pemudah Cara Perniagaan (Pemudah),” he told reporters at the Traffic Management Centre here today.
Najib said about RM200,000 had been spent to upgrade several facilities in the city, especially traffic lights at strategic locations and closing of U-turns.
He said the DBKL was also studying the possibility of preventing heavy vehicles that are more than 15 years old from entering the city to avoid traffic congestion.
“We will discuss the matter with the Road Transport Department to see if heavy vehicles that are old can be prevented from entering major roads. There are many cases of lorries breaking down along busy roads, causing massive traffic jams,” he said.
Meanwhile, Pemudah DBKL Chairman Pardip Kumar Kukreja denied claims that traffic congestion in the city was due to inefficiency and poor condition of roads.
He noted the selfish attitude of many drivers and said KL needed “first class” drivers to match the top-notch road infrastructure.
