PETALING JAYA:
There was a drop in the number of fatal accidents during the Op Lancar period, conducted nationwide from Oct 17 to Oct 21 in conjunction with the Deepavali celebration.

Bukit Aman traffic investigation and enforcement department director Yusri Hassan Basri said that although the number of road accidents increased by 5.2% to 8,940 cases during the period this year, compared to 8,408 cases last year, there was a decrease in the number of fatal accidents and deaths by 9.8% and 12%, respectively.

He said a total of 82 fatal accident cases were recorded this year, compared to 90 in 2024, while the number of deaths dropped to 85 people, from 96 people the previous year, Bernama reported.

“The highest number of deaths with 61 people or 72% this year involved motorcyclists and pillion riders, a decrease of 20% from 76 deaths last year,” he said in a statement.

Yusri said 43,379 summonses were issued this year compared to 52,090 summonses in 2024, a reduction of 8,711 summonses.

“Based on the decrease in the number of deaths and summonses issued, road users’ awareness of traffic regulations and road laws is increasing,” he said.

Yusri said that throughout the five days of the operation, 9.9 million vehicles used the North-South Expressway, including the East Coast Expressway 2, the Karak Expressway (1.2 million vehicles) and the West Coast Expressway (618,173 vehicles).
