Rayer slams two reps over call to limit CM’s term

Penang backbencher RSN Rayer lambasts Tanjung Bungah rep for attending a Gerakan roundtable on limiting CM's tenure.

GEORGE TOWN:
A DAP backbencher today sounded off two fellow party representatives for pushing for a two-term limit to the chief minister’s post.

A shouting match started when RSN Rayer (DAP-Seri Delima) began berating Teh Yee Cheu (DAP-Tanjung Bungah) for his participation in a roundtable session, organised by Barisan Nasional component party Gerakan.

Teh was present but did not utter a word.

Rayer said he was disappointed that Teh had taken part in the public discussion last Saturday.

“It is saddening and embarrassing that Tanjung Bungah (Teh) went for a roundtable organised by another party. It is unacceptable, ” Rayer said.

Lydia Ong Kok Fooi (DAP-Berapit) then interjected, saying Teh’s call to limit the chief minister post to two terms was a move in the right direction.

She said this will ensure leaders do not abuse their powers by hanging on to their position for too long.

Speaker Law Choo Kiang then told both assemblymen to stand down.

Law reminded Rayer not to make personal attacks and told him to focus on his debate.

Rayer continued to speak out against Teh and Ong. Law sternly told Rayer to “put an end to it”.

Teh had submitted a proposal to limit the service of the Penang chief minister to two terms and to allow women to also hold the post.

It was rejected due to a technicality before the current assembly sitting.

Undaunted, Teh said he would try again at the next sitting. Teh’s motion on this matter has been rejected three times to date.
