PETALING JAYA:
There is no need to amend the Sarawak constitution to accommodate more than the three deputy chief ministers (DCM) in the state, says Deputy Chief Minister James Masing.

According to a Borneo Post Online report, Masing said all DCMs were sworn in as cabinet members and added, “It is the chief minister who will appoint his deputies.”

The PRS president was commenting on a statement by Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi of a possible amendment to Sarawak’s constitution to allow more than three DCMs.

Masing also said having three DCMs was nothing new in Sarawak as in the early ‘80s, Alfred Jabu from PBB, Daniel Tajem from SNAP and Dr Wong Soon Kai from SUPP were all appointed to the post.

Last week, Masing, alongside PBB duo, Douglas Uggah Embas and Abang Johari Openg were made DCMs in the new Sarawak cabinet line up, following the recently concluded Sarawak state election.

Prior to the election, Sarawak’s only DCM was Jabu. The former Layar assemblyman did not seek re-election and retired from office.
