SUBANG JAYA:
Those who have tarnished the country’s image are those from the ruling government itself, said political cartoonist Zunar.

Commenting on criticisms directed at him by Communications and Multimedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak, Zunar, whose real name is Zulkiflee Anwar Ulhaque, said he was not the one responsible for the tainted image of the country.

“My exhibition is all about corruption and freedom of information in Malaysia, issues surrounding (former Opposition leader) Anwar Ibrahim and the National Security Council Act.

“These are all very important issues that are talked about by Malaysians.

“I am only commenting on them through my cartoons,” he told FMT.

He was referring to Salleh’s remarks that it was “not right” for Zunar to give a false impression of Malaysia by exhibiting his cartoons overseas.

Salleh had also said that while critics of Prime Minister Najib Razak are free to disagree with the prime minister, in doing so, they should not tarnish the country’s image which could affect its economy and reputation.

However according to Zunar, he was there in Geneva, Switzerland, for the exhibition by invitation.

“I was invited by Cartoonists for Peace and the Mayor of Geneva for the exhibition. Former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan is the patron and they gave me a place to exhibit my work.

“And has Salleh seen the exhibition? If he has, tell me which part is not ‘right’. Besides, I am not the one who gave the country a bad name.

“It’s the politicians from Barisan Nasional.”
