PETALING JAYA:
The Automated Enforcement System (AES) has been effective in preventing road accidents in all locations where the cameras were installed.

Road Transport Department (RTD) enforcement director Valluvan Veloo said there had been no accidents reported in the 14 locations with AES cameras, since 2012.

According to him, the rate of compliance with speed limits had also shot up to 96% at such spots.

“At the Slim River stretch, motorists slow down before reaching the site where the device is fixed.

“At Lebuh Sentosa in Putrajaya, compliance with the 70km per hour speed limit increased to more than 80% from 50%,” he was quoted as saying.

Valluvan based the statistics on a study by the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety (Miros).

The AES is also due for an upgrade, where it will likely be merged with the Kejara demerit point system.

The new Kejara, currently awaiting Parliament’s approval, covers a wider scope of offences including tailgating, bullying and driving in the emergency lane.

The first 20 demerit points accumulated will result in a warning notice to the motorist concerned while a further 20 demerit points will mean a six-month suspension of the motorist’s driving licence.

The third and fourth accumulations of demerit points will result in an eight-month suspension and 12-month suspension, respectively.
