KUALA LUMPUR:
“Don’t take matters into your own hands”.

This is the warning from Federal Territories Deputy Minister Loga Bala Mohan to IPF Utama, after the political party threatened to change the street sign of Jalan Berhala in Brickfields to Jalan Pandithan.

Speaking to FMT, Loga said the gazetting and changing of road names was the prerogative of the Federal Territories Minister, and that IPF Utama should not attempt to change the street signs on their own.

Last week, IPF Utama president M.V. Mathialagan issued an ultimatum to Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), demanding that the street name be changed after the late IPF president M.G. Pandithan within two weeks, failing which IPF Utama members would take it upon themselves to do it.

Loga said, according to records, IPF had applied to change the name of the road and the request was approved in 2009. However, the change was not implemented due to infighting within the IPF.

“The implementation will happen when the time comes,” he said.

According to Mathialagan, former MIC president Samy Vellu had announced the street’s official change of name in 2008 to honour the late Pandithan, who had founded the IPF.

Pandithan, a former MIC vice-president, left the party to form IPF in 1990. He passed away in 2008. IPF is a Barisan Nasional-friendly party.
