PETALING JAYA: The Election Commission (EC) will meet this Friday to discuss the parliamentary seats of Sungai Besar in Selangor and Kuala Kangsar in Perak.

The EC, in a statement today said that Dewan Rakyat Speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia informed them of the vacancy of the two seats yesterday.

The seats fell vacant after the two elected representatives from Barisan Nasional (BN) – Noriah Kasnon and Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar Wan Ahmad – died in a helicopter accident in Sarawak last week.

The meeting this Friday in Putrajaya will be chaired by EC chairman Mohd Hashim Abdullah, and will discuss the nomination and polling dates for the two by-elections, the statement said.

BN defeated PAS in close contests for both seats in the last general election on May 5, 2013. Noriah won Sungei Besar with a 399-vote majority while Wan Mohammad Khair-il took Kuala Kangsar with a 1,082 majority.
