Azmin: By-election in Sungai Besar likely before Raya

Selangor MB predicts a by-election for the seat during the fasting month which starts in June.

PETALING JAYA: Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali said today a by-election for Sungai Besar will likely be held during the fasting month, which begins in June.

Malay Mail Online quoted him saying that any by-election must be held within 60 days (from the day a seat is declared vacant by the Election Commission), making this the second or third day of Hari Raya.

“That is my guess. I don’t think they will conduct an election during Hari Raya.

“So I think either in the fasting month or before the fasting month starts on the 6th of June,” he was quoted saying at the Selangor Government’s monthly assembly today.

The Sungai Besar seat became vacant after Plantation Industries and Commodities Deputy Minister Noriah Kasnon of Umno, died in a helicopter crash in Sarawak last week.

Others killed in the crash were Kuala Kangsar MP Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar Wan Ahmad; Noriah’s husband Asmuni Abdullah; Plantation Industries and Commodities secretary-general Dr Sundaran Annamalai; Noriah’s bodyguard Ahmad Sobri Harun; and Filipino pilot Rudolf Rex Ragas.
