Stressing that it would also not form any alliance with Pakatan Harapan, the party’s information chief, Bobby William said it will now serve as a “check and balance” for the state government.
“As a local Opposition party, PBDS-Baru will fight for the rights of Sarawakians, particularly the Dayak community and ensure that their interests are taken care of,” he said at a press conference today.
The party, William said, will also welcome any of the 35 independent candidates to join them regardless of them winning or losing at the polls tomorrow.
Prior to its announcement, PBDS-Baru have been largely supportive of Chief Minister Adenan Satem’s administration.
Formed in 2013, PBDS-Baru, is fielding five candidates in the 11th state election.
They are Patrick Anek Uren (Opar), Mark Murau Sumon (Kedup), Cobbold Lusoi (Bukit Semunja), Pok Ungkut (Balai Ringin) and Philemon John Edan (Senadin) .
Prior to PBDS-Baru turning its back on the ruling coalition, it was among a group of BN-friendly parties that included Teras, SWP and UPP.
More than 1.1 million Sarawakians will vote in the first election tomorrow since Chief Minister Adenan Satem took over from Taib Mahmud.
