PETALING JAYA:
Sarawak Chief Minister Adenan Satem has pledged to look into other cases of people caught in religious “limbo” once the state election is concluded.

Adenan said this in a brief statement today, in reference to the case of Sarawakian Rooney Rebit, a Bidayuh, who recently won a court case to have his religion changed from Islam to Christianity.

The National Registration Department (NRD) however appealed against the court decision but withdrew the appeal later.

In the statement, Adenan said: “Now that I have persuaded the federal authorities to withdraw the case against Rooney anak Rebit, please rest assured that I will look at the other cases in due time after the election and come up with a clear policy.

“This is especially so in cases where people are left in ‘limbo’,” he said.

The NRD’s decision to withdraw its appeal came after Adenan spoke to Prime Minister Najib Razak about the matter.

Adenan’s “intervention” however, did not sit well with Malay rights groups such as Perkasa and Isma, who both issued statements slamming Najib and Adenan for using their political powers to meddle in “sensitive” religious matters.
