SUPP: Talk about local, not federal issues

Kota Sentosa candidate Wilfred Yap says election campaigns should focus on drainage issues, traffic jams and stateless people rather than GST and 1MDB.

Wilfred-Yap
KUCHING: Campaigns in the run-up to the May 7 Sarawak election should focus on issues concerning Sarawakians and not the nation, Wilfred Yap of SUPP has said.

The Kota Sentosa candidate said he would rather focus on solving pressing issues such as poor drainage, traffic jams, stateless people, and children without birth certificates.

“These are local issues and I want to solve all of it.

“Challenge me on state issues and don’t keep bringing federal issues here.

“Why do you need these people (Opposition politicians) coming here to flame issues and make people angry? he said in response to the Opposition raising issues such as the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

Yap was speaking to reporters after attending a “Parents Day” celebration, here last night.

Since campaigning began on April 25, PKR and DAP have been harping on the controversies plaguing the state investment arm as well as the implementation of the GST.

Despite Sarawak Chief Minister Adenan Satem daring the Opposition to fight him on local issues instead of dragging GST to attack Sarawak Barisan Nasional, several DAP candidates have argued instead that the GST was a local issue as the tax affected Sarawakians as well.

DAP had also accused Sarawak lawmakers of being equally culpable for increasing the cost of living there by allowing the GST to be passed in parliament.
