ALOR GAJAH:
Rayani Air, Malaysia’s first Syariah-compliant airline, could lose its air service licence and air operators certificate if the Department of Civil Aviation is not satisfied with its explanations about the company’s operations, said Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai.

He said DCA’s action would be based on various factors taken into consideration including the company’s capability to continue operations.

Rayani’s air operator’s certificate was suspended for three months beginning on April 11, when the airline halted operations without DCA approval, after suffering flight cancellations, delays and mechanical problems.

“We are still giving Rayani Air an opportunity to explain to the DCA on the issues that cropped up during its entire three-month operation before taking any further action.

“Currently we are still holding hearings with Rayani Air and so far we have not obtained further information on any action against the company,” he told reporters today.

Asked about Rayani Air’s reported failure to settle salary arrears of employees, Liow said the complaint could be channeled to the Industrial Relations Department to protect the rights of workers.

He said employees of the company were entitled to take legal action if a settlement could not be reached with the employer to settle their salary arrears.
