PETALING JAYA:
Dr Noordin Ahmad, a Malaysian businessman, has been unveiled as the new owner of Italy’s Serie B club FC Bari 1908, after acquiring a 50% stake in the club for a price of €12 million (RM53.159 million).

In a video on FC Bari’s Facebook page, Noordin was seen arriving in Bari-Palese airport and greeted by the club’s current president, Gianluca Paparesta.

“Hello Bari, I’m in love with Bari now. Bari always,” Noordin said in the video.

Previously, several Italian newspapers had claimed that Paparesta was quoted as saying he had reached an agreement with the club’s board of directors about the sale of the stake to Noordin on April 8.

Before the sale, Paparesta owned a 95% stake in the Southern Italian club.

Speculation about the takeover arose when the Jalur Gemilang was spotted during FC Bari’s home match against Cesena at their home ground in Stadio San Nicola on April 4.

According to Bernama, it was not the first time that Noordin was interested in Italian football. It was reported that he had previously been spotted with Italian lawyer Grazia Innarelli at Seria A Club SS Lazio in hopes of becoming part of the club.

Paparesta reportedly bought FC Bari under a different name in May 20, 2014 for €2 million (RM8.850 million) during the club’s third bankruptcy auction.

Nicknamed the iGalletti (The Cockerels) or iBiancorossi (The White-Red) after its colours, FC Bari was founded in 1908 and currently occupies third spot in Italy’s second tier with 57 points from 35 matches.
