IPOH:
The state assemblyman for Aulong, Leow Thye Yih, of DAP, has been suspended for one month from attending the Perak State Assembly meeting, effective from April 1.

Perak State Assembly Speaker SK Devamany said the decision to suspend Leow was made by the Perak State Assembly Committee on Rights and Freedom after the assemblyman made an ill-intent accusation against another assemblyman during the last sitting.

He said the one-month suspension, which was in accordance with the Standing Orders 36(3)(a) and 36(3)(b), was the longest in the history of the Perak State Assembly.

“With the suspension, the Aulong assemblyman will not be allowed to attend official state government events or receive the salary and related allowances,” he told a press conference here today in view of the first meeting of the fourth term of the 13th Perak State Assembly next week.

The meeting will be held from April 12 to 18 at Bangunan Perak Darul Ridzuan here with the opening ceremony to be graced by the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah.

The action taken against Leow was in connection with his accusation that Menteri Besar Zambry Abd Kadir had obtained a commission from a developer for a property project in Taiping.

However, Devamany said although the Aulong assemblyman was suspended and would no longer receive an allowance, payment to his service centre would still be made.

Meanwhile, a new clause on the dress code for Perak state assemblymen attending the opening ceremony of the State Assembly meeting has been inserted in the State Assembly Standing Orders.

Devamany said that Regulation 11A (1) in the Standing Orders requires all assemblymen attending the ceremony to wear the “Hari Kalung” attire, or the number one dress.

He said the new regulation was made following the action of Opposition assemblymen who refused to wear the ceremonial dress, but instead had turned up wearing black, during the opening ceremony of the State Assembly by Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah last year.

“If anyone dares to disobey the Standing Orders, he or she will not be allowed to be involved in the ceremony.“

Devamany said three enactments would be tabled next week, namely the Perak Coastal Management 2016; Perak Housing and Real Property Board Enactment 2016; and the Perak Members Of The Administration And The Legislative Assembly (Remuneration) (Amendment) Enactment 2016.
