JOHOR BAHARU:
Police shot dead three men believed to be robbers in a shootout during a dramatic car chase over four kilometres here yesterday.

Two of the men died on the spot in Jalan Permas Utara and one died as he was taken to hospital in the incident which happened at about 6pm, said Johor Police chief Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd.

He said police recovered two semi-automatic pistols from the robbers’ car, a Toyota Camry that was reported stolen in Bukit Indah.

Wan Ahmad Najmuddin said police were tipped off about the robbers, in their 20s, who were in a car that was being driven around in Jalan Permas 1.

On seeing the police, the car sped off and the police gave chase, he said, adding that the robbers opened fire at the pursuing police car.

The police returned fire as they chased the robbers over four kilometres to Jalan Permas Utara, he said.

“Two of the robbers died on the spot while one died as he was being taken to hospital,” he said.

The bodies were sent to the Sultanah Aminah Hospital.

“We believe they had been targeting cash transit at financial institutions,” he said.
