KUALA LUMPUR: Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Azalina Othman Said has instructed Nurul Izzah Anwar of PKR to stop “over-politicising” the issue of being referred to Parliament’s Rights and Privileges Committee over her meeting with Jacel Kiram last year.

“It would be better if she (Nurul) could use this opportunity to explain herself,” Azalina said in a statement today.

Yesterday, Nurul had questioned if she would be judged fairly by the committee regarding her meeting in November last year with Jacel Kiram, daughter of Jamalul Kiram III, the self-proclaimed Sulu Sultan allegedly behind the Lahad Datu incursion years ago.

The Lembah Pantai MP also accused Azalina, who sits on the committee, of being the one who referred her in the first place.

Azalina who is Pengerang MP however denied Nurul’s accusation, stressing the motion to refer the lawmaker to the committee was by the government.

“Furthermore, the motion was debated and decided on by the Dewan Rakyat on December 3, 2015.”

It was reported that on December 3, the Dewan Rakyat approved a motion by Azalina that Nurul be referred to the committee, following her meeting with Jacel in Manila, that outraged many quarters in Malaysia.

The motion was approved with 105 supporting and 88 against after it was debated for over an hour.

In 2013, Jamalul’s followers, entered the country by boat in stages at Felda Sahabat 17, Kampong Tanduo, Lahad Datu in an effort to regain the sovereignty of Sabah.

The area turned into a battlefield between the country’s security forces and the Sulu invaders, and resulted in the death of 63 militants and 10 Malaysian security forces personnel.
