Tanjung Bungah assemblyman Teh Yee Cheu said his proposal, albeit not new, was needed to rejuvenate the leadership in Penang and prevent incidences of cronyism.
“My proposal will give way to more aspiring, qualified and talented politicians, so that they will have a chance to hold public office and contribute in different ways.
“This is also to prevent unscrupulous and over-friendly businessmen from seeking unfair advantages over the chief executive, putting them in difficult positions and uncalled for challenges.
“Lets give everybody a chance, it is time to change for the sake of accountability to the people.” he said in a press conference in Komtar today.
Teh submitted his private member’s motion to the state Constitutional Committee; Legislative Assembly speaker Law Choo Kiang and his secretary M Maheswari today.
“I hope the motion will be accepted and discussed in the assembly sitting in May,” Teh added.
Teh had similarly proposed the limitation to the chief ministerial post last year, but failed to get 10 yays required for a debate to commence.
Despite his peers having accused him of mutiny, Teh has been relentless in his pursuit.
Expressing confidence that he might get the nod this time around, Teh said several Pakatan Harapan assemblymen had given their initial reviews of the motion.
He said three PKR assemblymen, namely Machang Bubuk rep Lee Khai Loon; Kebun Bunga rep Cheah Kah Peng and Penanti rep Norlela Ariffin had given their feedback.
“I am naming these people for the sake of transparency. My apologies,” Teh said.
