‘Bohong’ gets two MPs ejected from Dewan Rakyat

That word results in an hour-long argument, with Lim Guan Eng and Teo Kok Seong, getting booted out.

KUALA LUMPUR:
Due to a simple word, “bohong” (lie), two Opposition lawmakers had to exit the Dewan Rakyat in less than a graceful manner.

The two MPs, Lim Guan Eng (DAP-Bagan) and Teo Kok Seong (DAP-Rasah), were caught in a verbal fight which lasted over an hour this evening.

It began with Lim demanding that Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Abdul Rahman Dahlan retract a statement in which the latter was alleged to have accused the Penang chief minister of lying.

Rahman refused to do so and instead claimed he was merely saying that Lim’s statement regarding the price limit of affordable homes was a lie.

Lim would not back down as he pointed to the fact that the word “bohong” was unparliamentary and hence Rahman was obliged to retract it.

The Dewan Rakyat’s Deputy Speaker Ismail Mohamad Said disagreed and sided with Rahman, echoing that the word was not in any way directed at Lim.

Ismail, who appeared to grow tired of the argument, then ejected Lim from the House, along with Teo, who had breached the Dewan Rakyat rule by using his phone to record the argument.

It didn’t end there.

Dissatisfied, Lim spoke to reporters at the Parliament lobby where he expressed disappointment over the deputy speaker’s decision.

“The word ‘bohong’ has been unparliamentary since my first term in Parliament in 1986.

“Back then, whoever said the word without retracting it would have been told to leave.”
