PETALING JAYA:
“Who is the liar?” – that’s the question Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng asked Urban Well-Being, Housing and Local Government Minister Abdul Rahman Dahlan in the contentious issue of prices for “affordable” houses in Penang.

Lim, in retaliation to Rahman Dahlan branding him a liar in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday, said Penang was merely following the federal government’s guidelines for affordable housing.

“It is very clear that the pricing was determined by the federal government, where Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak announced it in 2012 when he presented the 2013 budget,” Lim was quoted by Malaysiakini as saying.

“Perhaps, Abdul Rahman was not a minister yet then, perhaps he cannot remember. But to say that I lied about affordable housing is not only wild, untruthful but irresponsible.”

“He better get his facts right; when he said I lied, it also raises the question: did Najib lie?”

Rahman had yesterday said Lim was lying about the affordable housing rate capped at RM400,000, when he was asked to explain the differing rate for houses deemed “affordable” between the states.

The minister said the DAP-led Penang state government set RM400,000 as the maximum price for affordable housing, a condition not agreed to by the federal government.

Lim also produced at a press conference today, proof in the form of a Bernama report and documents by PR1MA, that showed that the federal government had set the prices of affordable houses to a maximum of RM400,000.

The DAP secretary-general also said the Penang government would consider lowering the affordable housing price range.
