PETALING JAYA: Former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad could not hold back his tears when reminiscing about his friend, former Indonesian leader, President Suharto.
In a televised interview with TV One, Mahathir was asked to describe his relationship with the Republic’s former president.
“I was close to him, not just as a leader, but as a friend.”
Suharto, the elder statesman said, was like an older brother whose views he sought.
“I could discuss matters with him frankly, get his views and suggestions on what steps we should take.”
Suharto, an army general, ruled Indonesia for 32 years, before stepping down in 1998. He passed away in 2008 at the age of 86.
Mahathir was Malaysia’s prime minister from 1981 to 2003.
