Kadir: ‘Kafir’ often more Islamic than ‘believers’

That's why Singapore is sparkling clean compared to Malaysia, says the veteran newsman.

KUALA LUMPUR: Veteran journalist A Kadir Jasin has commended Singapore MP David Ong for exhibiting what he calls “Islamic behaviour” in his decision to resign in the face of an allegation about an extramarital affair.

“Clearly,” Kadir said in his latest blog entry, “many non-believers are more Islamic in their behaviour and actions than some Muslims.”

He was commenting on a news report that Ong had resigned on Saturday “due to personal reasons.” Ong, a member of Singapore’s ruling People’s Action Party, was the MP for Bukit Batok.

“No,” Kadir said, “he was not found to have S$877.3-million (about RM2.6-billion) in his personal account. Nor was he found to have lied about a huge donation he secretly received.

“His indiscretion, according to media reports, is an extramarital affair with a woman who is a grassroots activist in his constituency.”

Channel NewsAsia reported on Saturday night that the affair was believed to have gone on for at least six months “and came to light after the woman’s husband complained about it.”

Kadir noted that Ong, even though a non-Muslim, defended himself against the allegation of sexual indiscretion by quoting PAS President Abdul Hadi Awang’s statement that such an accusation would not be valid unless “three pious men” were produced as witnesses. (Hadi was probably misquoted. Islamic law requires the testimony of four righteous male eyewitnesses to validate a charge of fornication.)

Kadir said the news about Ong reminded him of a report early this month in which Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Azalina Othman Said was quoted as saying that Umno was the best party to depend on in fighting for Islam.

“Azalina is one of the newest and the most ardent admirers of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak,” he noted. “She was rescued from political wilderness some months ago.”

He said he could understand why Azalina referred to Umno as the surest protector of Islam. “When nothing else works, people go back to religion. Islam is the best way of corralling Muslims, especially Malays.”

Kadir said he was certain that in “Umno-ruled Malaysia,” there were married Muslim men and women who had committed indiscretions similar to the one Ong was accused of, but he noted that “in this kafir-ruled country called Singapore, an MP willingly resigned for having an affair with a married woman.”

“In that country too, some years ago, a minister committed suicide upon being investigated for corruption,” he added.

“Now you know why the kafir Singapore is sparkling clean compared to Malaysia, which is built upon Umno-protected Islam.

“And for that reason too they don’t like people using their banking system to launder money. That’s why they froze 1MDB-related offshore accounts. That’s why people who are suspected of wrongdoing were shown the door.”
