KUALA LUMPUR: Four individuals have been charged under the Official Secrets Act (OSA) 1972 in the last five years, Minister in Prime Minister’s Department Azalina Othman Said revealed today.

The four were among 15 individuals investigated between 2011 and 2015, she said, refusing however to reveal their identities.

“Under Section 8 of the OSA 1972, any individual who leaks an official secret, code or password can be jailed up to seven years,” she said in a written reply to Anuar Abd Manap (BN–Sekijang).

In his question, Anuar had asked Prime Minister Najib Razak to state the number of individuals and the type of action taken by the Attorney-General’s Chambers against those convicted of leaking state secrets under the OSA in the past five years.

The last time the OSA made headlines was in February this year when Sin Chew Daily reported Attorney-General Mohamed Apandi Ali as saying he was considering increasing the punishment meted out to those convicted of having leaked state secrets under the Act.

This included life imprisonment and 10 strokes of the rotan.

Apandi said the OSA would also be used against reporters who refused to disclose their sources for the leaked information they used in their reports.
