Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu publicity chief Peter Minos said DAP had been wooing Chinese voters by capitalising on Umno’s internal problems, particularly the allegations against Prime Minister Najib Razak.
This appeared to be the only obstacle that might stand in the way of a BN victory in the state, he said in an interview with FMT.
Sarawak BN was nevertheless confident of winning the election, he added.
“We are ready, but then so is the opposition,” he said. “DAP, especially, has been working very hard. It’s harping on KL issues such as 1MDB, the various scandals and GST.”
He pointed out that Sarawak BN had always tried to distance itself from Umno and other BN parties in West Malaysia, but he acknowledged that DAP was having a “field day” painting it as guilty by association.
However, Minos believes that DAP’s tactics would not work for other opposition parties because they entered Sarawak with the disadvantage of being peninsular-based and being too Islamic.
“DAP can appeal only to the urban Chinese who are upset with what is going on in KL,” he said.
He also claimed that Sarawak voters doubted Pakatan Harapan’s ability to unite the various races in the state because they saw no unity within the coalition itself.
