That description of a natural disaster can be used as an analogy for what may happen to Barisan Nasional in the next general election if Umno doesn’t resolve the problems it’s currently facing, according to Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) publicity chief Peter Minos.
In an interview with FMT, Minos said that although Sarawak BN tended to distance itself from its counterpart in Peninsular Malaysia, PBB couldn’t help being concerned over the effects of scandals currently associated with Umno.
“We are worried, especially with Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s resignation,” he said. “There will definitely be complications.
“I predict it will get tougher and tougher for Umno. It has to handle this properly because we have to face the general election in two years’ time.”
Peter said Umno shouldn’t deny that it needed to resolve its political problems urgently because these could drag the country down.
He advised Prime Minister Najib Razak to take pointers from Sarawak Chief Minister Adenan Satem’s method of running his state.
“We should be open enough to know there are problems and solve them,” he said. “That’s where I think Adenan is good. You like him or not, that’s your own issue. But he’s solving problems and I hope our boss, Najib, will do the same.
“We are a democratic country; so those who rule must get the respect of those being ruled. If you lose the respect, no force on earth can make the ruled respect those who are ruling. The problem is how to get the respect. Easy said, difficult to do, but it can be done.”
He said one of Umno’s problems was that it practised a culture of recycling the same old candidates to represent the party while closing the doors to younger and more capable faces. This was one of the reasons young politicians were drawn to the opposition parties, he added.
“I think it’s wrong for any party to stop young people from rising up the ranks as the future of the country belongs to them,” said the 67-year-old politician. “They are bolder, they have new initiatives, new ideas. It’s high time for people like me to give way to the young. We can help them and guide them, but the youngsters are the ones who should be looking after this country.”
