KUCHING: The Sarawak government has no issue with newspaper companies spreading their wings or expanding operations in the state as long as they abide by the laws and regulations.

Chief Minister Adenan Satem said he appreciated the roles played by them to basically inform, inspire and innovate, which were very noble values that could be inculcated in people.

“If you do the proper things, we certainly welcome you,” he said when launching the Star and Sin Chew e-papers combo package programme for Sarawak at his office here today.

However, he said these days, the people were very lazy to read (books) and preferred magazines and to look at pictures.

“That is why in preparing the state Barisan Nasional (BN) manifesto for the coming 11th state election, I have instructed those responsible to use more pictures and less words.”

Adenan said it was the right thing to do for The Star and Sin Chew – the country’s leading English and Chinese newspapers – to come up with their respective e-paper versions.

“Nowadays, with the advent of technology, you must go electronic to reach out to a greater audience or to do greater things.

“Make use of the technology or else you will be left out.

“The world is changing and the people too are readily embracing technology through their smart phones and other electronic gadgets.”

Later, when met by the media, Adenan said the manifesto was currently being done.

He also said he would be announcing the chosen BN candidates’ names at random, group by group, until the end of this month.

“In fact I have already announced some, including those BN direct candidates.”
