Defending the Citizens’ Declaration by his father and opposition politicians on Friday, calling for Najib’s ouster and for political reforms, Mukhriz said even the opposition wanted Najib to be replaced with another BN leader before the next general election.
He said the reason for urgency was to save the country from being destroyed by a leader abusing his power.
He pointed out that the opposition parties could easily win the next general election, which must be held by mid-2018, because the rakyat rejected Najib, which could lead to rejection of the BN.
It did not make sense to claim that the opposition, including the DAP, would benefit from the Declaration and from Najib’s immediate ouster.
“Will BN collapse if Najib steps down? BN still controls the majority of seats in the Dewan Rakyat,” he said in a statement. “The only thing that needs to be done is to appoint a new prime minister from among Barisan MPs, not from the opposition.”
He said the opposition had acknowledged the reality that they could not wrest power until the next elections, but if the anti-Najib forces were to wait until then, any new prime minister would be from the opposition.
“That is certainly not Mahathir’s objective,” he said. “For the security of the country and BN’s position as the government, Najib must be replaced by other BN leaders,” he said.
