PETALING JAYA:
The woman who allegedly threw her newborn baby from her 18th floor apartment in Setapak on Monday had no record of mental illness, according to police investigations.

The mother, a 39-year-old real estate agent, had told police that she thought her baby was dead, said Wangsa Maju police chief ACP Mohamad Roy Suhaimi Sarif.

“Based on an initial post-mortem report, it was revealed the baby was still alive before the act,” Mohamad Roy said in a report by the Malay Mail Online.

“The case has been classified under 309B of the Penal Code for infanticide, but we will leave it to the DPP to decide if the suspect will also be charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.”

The woman has been remanded until Sunday and the case has been forwarded to the deputy public prosecutor (DPP) for further action.

She is alleged to have thrown her newborn baby from the 18th floor of the apartment block, with the umbilical cord still attached to the infant’s body. The infant was found by residents five hours later.

The woman, learnt to have been in the midst of a divorce, was believed to have given birth to the infant between 3am and 3.30am in her bathroom, and had thrown the baby immediately after giving birth.

Police found a blood trail from the bathroom that led to the balcony. The woman was arrested on the same day and was sent to Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

Mohamad Roy denied claims that the woman’s five-year-old daughter was left alone after her mother’s arrest.

“The couple who lived with the woman took care of the child yesterday. We have now handed the child over to the Welfare Department as we have yet to locate other family members who can care for her.”
