KUALA TERENGGANU:
The silence from organisations such as the Global Movement of Moderates and the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) over rising extremism in the country can be viewed as their legitimisation of it, said Opposition lawmaker Raja Bahrin Shah.

In a statement he issued today, the MP for Kuala Terengganu said, “In most cases silence is a form of consent. Where are the voices of the Global Moderates and Jakim? Why are they concentrating on what’s happening elsewhere while overlooking the clear potential domestic danger in Malaysia?”

He also called on Prime Minister Najib Razak and his administration to effectively address the rise of extremism in Malaysia.

“How safe is Malaysia from local breeding of the Islamic State (IS) culture and ideology? We have continuously reminded the government to nip the problem in the bud.”

He stated: “Potential conflicts are allowed to develop and sometimes even encouraged – Baju Merah (Red Shirts) Rally, Perkasa statements, and so-called local Shia threats are played up for the government-under-siege to stay in power.”

He stated that the introduction of numerous new security laws – Pota, Sosma, NSC – were nothing more than “dangerous games” pursued by an “irresponsible and desperate government.”

He called out the government on what he saw as “selective prosecution” in instances where religious leaders called for the extermination of traitors (hapuskan pengkhianat) and legitimised the spilling of blood (darah halal), but no action was taken because these threats were levelled against the Opposition.
