This despite "consistent" programs held by the department to explain the dangers posed by the group.

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) has admitted that it is difficult for them to curb the Islamic State (IS) propaganda spread all over the internet.

Jakim director-general Othman Mustapha said it is further complicated by the fact that Malaysians are easily influenced through the internet.

He said Jakim has consistently held programs to explain the dangers posed by the IS since last year, featuring local Imams.

“Our target was one million people, but we received more than that. We also received help from the Imams who provided explanations to the locals.

“I hope Malaysians will understand the real meaning of jihad because the IS’ interpretation of it (jihad) is wrong,” he said.

Othman said Jakim also held programs for the followers of the Shia and Wahabi sects.

The threat of the IS in the Asean region is clearer than ever, following the Jakarta attacks yesterday. IS has claimed responsibility for the incident, which claimed at least six lives.
