“What is he doing for Sirul? He (Sirul) is kept there in the detention centre with no clue as to what the future holds for him. Is he making an effort to ensure Sirul gets the right to be a permanent resident in Australia?”
Mahfuz was referring to Sirul’s lawyer, Kamarul Hisham Kamaruddin who in a press conference today, alleged that several groups and individuals have attempted to make contact with his client for personal gain.
Although Mahfuz’s name was never mentioned, it is public knowledge that the Pokok Sena Member of Parliament had on several occasions attempted to meet with Sirul at the Villawood Immigration Centre in Sydney where the latter is currently detained.
“I have no interest in politicising the turmoil that Sirul is currently in. What I did for Sirul was on the basis of humanity, to help his mother reconnect with the son she lost due to an injustice. It was never about politics and neither was it ever about me.
“I don’t know why his lawyer has denied him the right to meet his family all this while. He (Kamarul) should focus his attention on obtaining answers from the government on issues such as Sirul’s extradition status instead of leaving the man hanging the way he is now,” said Mahfuz to FMT.
In Kamarul’s revelation today, he stated that the interested parties have even offered to solve Sirul’s impending execution in exchange for information. They were also said to have advised Sirul to sack his defence team for failing to do a “good job.”
Kamarul claimed to have evidence supporting his statements and is waiting for the right time to disclose the identities of the said individuals.
Sirul, a former member of the elite police Special Action Unit and a former colleague of his were sentenced to death on January 13 this year for murdering Mongolian national Altantuya Shaariibuu.
Sirul however failed to appear in the Federal Court when the verdict was delivered, and was later reported to have fled to Australia.
