KUALA LUMPUR:
Batik Air has launched its direct route between Kuala Lumpur and Miri, marking the airline’s fourth destination in Sarawak after Kuching, Sibu and Bintulu.

The KL-Miri service operates 14 times weekly, offering twice-daily flights aboard Batik Air’s Boeing 737 aircraft. A range of economy and business class options are available to suit diverse travel preferences.

The inaugural flight was launched with a welcoming ceremony at Miri Airport yesterday, where passengers were greeted with traditional bead garlands courtesy of the Sarawak tourism board.

Guests of honour included Sarawak transport minister Lee Kim Shin and permanent secretary Wong Hee Sien, Miri mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang, Miri MP Chiew Choon Man, Sarawak tourism board director of stakeholder relations Mary Wan Mering, Tourism Malaysia deputy director (domestic and events division) Nadia Hanim Muhamad @ Mansor, and Miri Airport head of operations Anuar Izan Suhainih.

Miri is home to two Unesco world heritage sites, Gunung Mulu National Park and Niah National Park, boasting limestone caves, ancient rainforests and unique wildlife. Visitors can also explore cultural landmarks such as the Tamu Muhibbah Market, renowned for its vibrant atmosphere and traditional crafts that reflect Sarawak’s distinct identity.

Furthermore, Miri stands as a key player in Malaysia’s oil and gas sector, serving as a vital hub for energy production and commerce. This identity as a destination for business and leisure makes Miri an essential addition to Batik Air’s growing network.

Batik Air CEO Chandran Rama Muthy reaffirmed the airline’s dedication to bridging regions and supporting Sarawak’s position as a leading destination for tourism and investment.

“Miri represents a significant step forward in our mission to connect Malaysia’s diverse cities,” he said. “By providing this new direct service, Batik Air is proud to support Sarawak’s economic and tourism growth, facilitate seamless travel for locals and visitors, and showcase the remarkable offerings of Miri and Sarawak to the world.”

According to the Sarawak tourism board, Miri welcomed over 1.1 million tourists last year, marking a 51% growth from the previous year and contributing to Sarawak’s total of over 4.3 million visitor arrivals.
