The ultimate bathroom design checklist, part 2

Apart from lighting, storage, fixtures and colours, here are four further considerations you should make when creating your perfect powder room.

As the bathroom is the most-used room in the house, it should be comfortable, aesthetically pleasing and, most importantly, functional.

Lighting, storage, fixtures and colour schemes are important components to keep in mind when it comes to the perfect bathroom design.

Here are four further elements to consider when creating your personal haven in the home. Make sure to read part one of this article here.

1. Flooring

As the bathroom is exposed to the most amount of water, make sure the tiles don’t allow water damage to occur, and that accidents such as slipping and falling won’t happen.

Hardwood floors can warp and become damaged from exposure to moisture and humidity, so it’s best to avoid these at all costs.

Pro tip: Always go for matte or textured tiles, not glossy ones.

2. Height placement

Don’t let aesthetics sway you into buying and installing shower heads and bathtubs that are pleasing to the eye but not practical for everyone’s use. Carefully choose the height and measurements of your bathroom pieces.

The right mirror placement can make a significant difference, even allowing the bathroom to seem bigger. (Recommend.my pic)
  • Mirror

Hang your mirror up to 25cm above the sink faucet. Make sure it’s centred directly above the sink and between light fixtures, and that it is at eye level for all users before mounting.

  • Showerhead

The showerhead is generally installed about 200cm from the ground, regardless of whether it is adjustable or not. This is a comfortable height placement for even tall people.

3. Window treatment

When it comes to windows, keep in mind durability, privacy, and light control. There are different types of treatments, including:

  • Roman shades – functional and practical barriers that control natural light and help absorb sound;
  • faux wood blinds – elegant and versatile, these resist moisture and will not warp, crack, or attract mildew. They are also easy to clean.

Pro tip: Window size and placement are important as you want sufficient natural light while protecting your modesty. Use a waterproof roller blind or tint-frosted stickers for greater privacy.

Planning and layout are integral to ensure you make optimal use of the space available. (Recommend.my pic)

4. Space planning

The design of your bathroom will ultimately depend on the space available, while layout and planning will determine how well the design and space work together.

Make sure to think in practical terms, such as how easy the various fittings, storage spaces, and nooks and crannies would be to clean.

Take into account factors such as the bathroom door opening freely without hitting any fixtures, how drawers and other doors will open, and how you will move through the space.

Above all else, it is about functionality and practicality.

Pro tip: Make sure to accurately measure the space, and double-check the sizes and measurements of fittings you intend to install.
