So how can fans enjoy watching these intense sporting competitions serenely? How can fans stay calm as elimination rounds kick off?
Here are some tips from Anthony Mette, author of the book “Préparation mentale du sportif.” [Mental preparation for an athlete].*
Prepare yourself for the worst outcome
As you know, sport is not an exact science and coming into a match as a favourite often leads to disappointment.
The professional, who focuses on mental training, advises people to anticipate potential catastrophic scenarios in order to maintain hope in the difficult moments. This is referred to as ‘shields.’
“The more the fan knows how to anticipate the key moments of a match, the more they will spot the flaws and be useful in supporting the team.”
With the trainer indicating that supporters in the stadium can influence the match by 20% to 30%, it’s worth preparing this way.
Remember to breathe
“The whole stadium is holding its breath.” Sometimes this is no exaggeration. It’s a natural reflex when under stress, but it’s counterproductive to staying calm.
Poor oxygenation creates norepinephrine, known as a stress hormone. Among its side effects, it speeds up the heart rate and slows down digestion.
To help maintain regular breathing, the coach suggests doing breathing exercises during the day. Taking the time to breathe in and out slowly and deeply can help keep you calm during a tense game.
Maintain an attitude of fair play
This is easier said than done, especially in a sport where arguing is part of the culture. However, having a positive attitude allows you to better enjoy the moment and helps maintain a good-natured atmosphere for everyone.
The coach notes that a light-hearted attitude encourages players and allows the fans to enjoy the game even more. Because if the pressure builds, this way it leads to a celebration, not to violence.
These tips can also be used in other more recurring stressful situations on a daily basis.
