Despite the easing of restrictions, many employees are continuing to work remotely. Indeed, virtual modes of operation have become the new normal for almost every industry.

While working from home might be convenient and comfortable, it can be easy to neglect your physical health and wellbeing if you are consistently deskbound and leading a sedentary lifestyle.

Fortunately, there are easy ways to keep yourself in good shape. Here are five steps to prioritise your health and fitness while working from home.

1. Draw up a daily schedule

With the greater flexibility that comes with not having to go into the office, you have the opportunity to set a schedule that accommodates your health and fitness requirements.

It is, therefore, recommended that you incorporate periods of exercise into your daily routine.

2. Stay active

Now that you have a schedule that takes into regard your health and fitness, determine how to work out actively. Yoga and pilates are common home-based activities, while physical exercises are a great way to start your day.

To get started, there are many resources available online with qualified and experienced trainers.

Purchasing affordable equipment such as treadmills can also help with cardiovascular exercise. If you already have a gym membership, take time out of your day to leave the house and go for a workout.

At the very least, your daily schedule should include 30 minutes of walking outdoors.

3. Practise self-care

Commuting to and from work every day takes up a sizable chunk of your time and, depending on the demands of your job, a busy workday could add stress and tension to your mind and body.

While you are at home, devote some time to practising self-care. Stretching exercises, yoga or meditation will not only alleviate your senses, but can also help improve mental and physical health.

Other activities such as reading, watching your favourite TV show, or taking a warm bath can help you relax and unwind when you are feeling stressed.

4. Eat healthy

While exercising daily and practising self-care are integral for wellness, these are not necessarily enough. Eating healthy is equally crucial to avoid health issues.

Working in offices takes a significant toll on the human body, and eating out daily – especially if fast food is factored into the equation – can be damaging.

With easy access to your kitchen while working from home, consider cooking your own meals with healthy ingredients, incorporating more proteins and green veggies. If cooking every day is a hassle, prepare your meals in advance.

5. Keep track

Keep track of your health and exercise routine, and note your progress towards better overall wellbeing. Use wearable fitness devices, tracking apps, or simply a journal to keep yourself accountable when it comes to working out.

With a fitter, healthier self, you’re less likely to fall ill, thus greatly improving your productivity as you work from home.
