5 ways to lose those Chinese New Year calories

After days of overeating and drinking, it can be hard to get back to a healthier lifestyle. These tips might help.

If you celebrate Chinese New Year, you’ve likely not had a break from eating. At least three days of yee sang, pineapple tarts, and rich dishes will surely show their effects via the weighing scale.

It’s time to lose the calories! Getting back into shape is not difficult, though you probably need a bit of motivation to get started. Here are some ways to shed the CNY kilos.

1. Eat smaller meals

Eating smaller meals more frequently helps keep you full, which stops you from snacking between meals. The smaller portions also grant you greater control over what you eat.

Conversely, eating heavier meals that are rich in carbohydrates – such as rice, noodles or pasta – can burden your digestive system, resulting in lower energy levels for the body to carry out other activities.

2. Remember your veggies

Vegetables that are high in fibre, such as beans, peas and broccoli, can lower cholesterol levels while aiding digestion, which is great for those who suffer from constipation.

A high-fibre diet will also prolong the feeling of fullness, so you won’t feel like snacking when you shouldn’t be.

3. Sweat it out

You need to sweat those calories away. Go for a jog, swim a few laps, or hit the gym – anything that gets your heart pumping.

Exercising helps you feel better physically as well as mentally, as it will trigger the release of endorphins in your brain and lift your mood.

You will also sleep better if you exercise regularly, leading you to feel more refreshed, focused and productive during the day.

4. Cut down on the drinks

No more “yam sengs” now that Chinese New Year is over. After days of feasting and drinking, it’s time to go easy on the booze.

Alcohol – especially beer, a CNY favourite – contains a high amount of carbs and calories. Drink more water and keep yourself hydrated.

5. Plan ahead

A healthy lifestyle isn’t just about eating well on selected days and “replacing” sinful meals with gym sessions. You need a consistently healthy diet and regular exercise to lose weight and maintain overall wellness.

Plan your workout sessions and meals in advance – when to exercise, what and how much to eat, and how to make it all fit within your daily schedule.
