Addiction is a disease just like any other, and it can be overwhelming and all-consuming.
Many people, especially youngsters, experiment with drugs or consume alcohol for fun.
The problem is that sometimes it can escalate into a simple addiction and if the person does not spot the issue quickly and take effective steps to control it, it can take over their life.
If you think you may be addicted to something, here are a few tips to help you put an end to it and take back control of your own life.
1. Decide to change
This is easier said than done, but the first and most important step to prevent addiction is to stop using the substances you are addicted to. As soon as you realise the problem may be getting out of hand, it is time to stop before it is too late.
Get rid of any substances in the house immediately and effectively so there is no more temptation to use them again. It might take a while for the body to get used to the changes, and it might not be easy.
But going through the withdrawal symptoms might be the thing you need to ensure you never go back to that place ever again.
2. Cut negative social ties
Oftentimes, the only reason people start using substances or develop an addiction in the first place is because of bad influences at social gatherings.

If your friends or social network has this effect on you, then you might need to cut these ties and start anew. Consider taking some time off from everything and everybody.
If necessary, look for rehab options to get away from the negative social influences you are surrounded by.
This will allow you to focus on getting better and eliminate your chances of relapsing and going back to using drugs or whatever substance you were addicted to.
3. Go to rehab
If you find it challenging to overcome a simple addiction on your own, there is no shame in seeking help by going to rehab.
Even if you do not think you have reached the point of being seriously addicted to something, going into rehab will help you prevent ever becoming seriously addicted.
Any rehabilitation facility will have professionals who can guide you on the right path and show you how to take control of your life and how to prevent your addiction from consuming you.
4. Get busy
One way to prevent addiction or relapse is to get busy. Start working at something you love and allow it to take up your time so you do not get a chance to think about your addictive substance.
Take charge of your life and do activities you are passionate about, freeing your mind of the addiction. Even if you do not get busy at work, as long as you are keeping active at something beneficial, that should do the trick.

5. Reach out
You could be doing everything right, but the thought of going back to your simple addiction consumes your mind. Reach out for help from a supportive person you trust.
It can be a friend, family member or a medical professional. Talking about your thoughts and reaching out to your support system will help you to find clarity and to think straight.
Sometimes, even if a person with addiction knows the right thing to do, they still need to hear it from someone they trust. They get the support and motivation needed to prevent the addiction.
Anyone who finds themselves starting to develop addictive behaviours knows how challenging it can be to stop them from escalating and regain control over their lives.
Whether you are addicted to drugs, alcohol or anything else, the key to preventing a simple addiction from developing into something more serious is to distance yourself from whatever led you there in the first place.
You need to take some time to focus on recovery and reach out to those who can help you get back on the right track. Do not hesitate to seek medical advice if necessary, to overcome your addiction healthily.
