As the saying goes, “do as the locals do”. So, if you’re ever in Perlis, why not eat as the locals eat?

One establishment worth checking out is Restoran Daging Bakar Nostalgia Hani 9 in Kuala Perlis. Situated close to the northernmost coastline of the peninsula, Nostalgia Hani is one of the most popular local “nasi daging bakar” (grilled beef with rice) restaurants here.

If you’re travelling from Kangar East to the coast along the Changlun-Kuala Perlis highway, it’s located on your right a few hundred metres from the ocean.

The choices here are simple: daging or ayam bakar served with fragrant yellow or white rice. You may opt for the “special”, which means more meat, or stick to the lower-protein version.

It’s highly recommended you go for the special.

The daging bakar special with nasi kuning (RM17) is aromatic, tender, juicy and delicious, and pairs perfectly with the kerisik air asam (sour plum kerisik) dipping sauce.

The semi-transparent fatty pieces are known as “harimau menangis”, or “tiger’s cry” (why, though? That’s a question worth asking when you visit), and are awesome if you enjoy fatty bits… full of flavour and absolutely mouthwatering.

There are unlimited refills of drinks and rice, so eat to your heart’s and stomach’s content!
