While char kuey teow is often considered the all-time favourite in Penang, Hokkien mee – or what the rest of Malaysia usually refers to as prawn mee – is probably the true No. 1 hawker dish in that northern state.
You can find prawn mee being offered at most of the old-school kopitiam on the island, and one of the most famous breakfast spots for this hot and spicy noodle dish is Kedai Kopi Swee Kong in George Town.
Located in Pulau Tikus right next to the wet market and directly across from the police station, parking in the area can be a bit challenging but not impossible. Do keep in mind that this prawn mee stall sells out by around 9am most days, so get yourself there early!
As for the dish itself? It might not be terribly exciting visually but, for what it lacks in aesthetic appeal, it excels in what matters most – the taste!

The combination of sliced pork, prawns, bean sprouts, and a generous amount of fried shallots works superbly with the thick and rich prawn-shell-infused broth. An optional serving of sambal kicks the spiciness level up several notches.
Go for the noodle of your choice: yellow mee, bee hoon, or a combination of both… absolutely delicious! If you’re ever in Penang one of these days, this place is a must-try.
