And how much protein does one really need on a daily basis? Well, research dictates that a sedentary adult requires about 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day.

Based on this concept, 3 Cups offers a range of delicious protein shakes at its zen-like café in Damansara Uptown.
Founder Ho Wei Lead says the café offers the same protein smoothies as Shakeasy Bar – another café specialising in protein smoothies – although Ho is hoping to expand the menu soon.
“These smoothies can be used as meal replacements, and they are suitable for everyone; they’re not limited to gym goers and those with active lifestyles,” said the 35-year-old, who used to work in the marketing department of a food company.

The café is awash with a calming positive energy, surrounded as it is by plants and elegant pieces of furniture designed by Ho’s friend Chan Yewmun, a resort consultant who utilises a portion of the space as his design studio.

According to Ho, the name “3 Cups” was inspired by the “three of cups” tarot card, which symbolises the abundance and joy that comes with collaboration and celebration of like-minded thinking.
“As an example, we like collaborating with other small local businesses,” said Ho, pointing to the bags on sale, beautifully handcrafted by women of the Penan tribe in East Malaysia.

Now a little about the protein shakes. Among the bestsellers is the cookies and cream frosted matcha protein shake – thick, creamy and absolutely delicious.
The “uptown kopi peng” protein shake is equally popular, particularly if you need an urgent caffeine fix.
“We want people to enjoy our beverages without feeling sinful or guilty,” said Ho, adding that most of the drinks are vegan as they’re made with plant-based protein and soy milk, making them suitable for those who are lactose intolerant. Sugar is also kept to a minimum.

Not into protein shakes? Try their variety of refreshing “slush teas” or ice-blended teas and fruit smoothies instead. In addition, the café also offers cakes, pastries and cookies for those feeling peckish.
There’s orange olive oil cake served with a dollop of Greek yoghurt, marble cake crowned with a chocolate glaze and a nutty, chocolate chip vegan banana loaf. Love pies? You’ll find the vegan pecan pie here rather pleasing.

For those who prefer something savoury, do try the vegan mushroom spinach puff pastry, which oozes with gooey goodness.
“We’ll be adding more snacks in the future,” he said, adding that Chan bakes quite a few of the desserts himself.

Despite only opening three months ago, many customers have since become friends. “Many share personal stories, even though I’m a stranger, which is really nice, because we’re often too busy with life and we might not always have someone we can talk to.
“It gives this space a ‘community vibe’, which is what I hoped for,” he said, adding that he and Chan plan to host craft and design-related events in the future.
If you’re looking for Christmas gifts, do consider their hampers, which feature special Christmas bakes, alongside ambient sprays, sanitisers and hand wash made by local businesses.
“The items come in the baskets handwoven by the Penan women, and you can reuse them.”

Although Ho acknowledges that specialising in protein shakes is still a new concept in Malaysia, he’s hopeful that over time, people will warm up to the idea.
“The best way is to try them yourselves. Our customers say that it fills them up; many have them for breakfast,” he said.
