If you find yourself in Kangar looking for a spot for lunch or dinner, one place worth checking out is this establishment with the charming name “OK Kedai Makanan & Minuman”.
Situated just across from the Kangar morning market, this is one of the most popular “tai chao” (big fry-up) restaurants in the area. The setup is pretty standard: plastic tables and chairs, some old photographs on the walls, and no menus.
Like most old-school eateries, a bit of conversation is required to get what you want; northern Hokkien is preferred here, but Mandarin will do, too.
Condiments include the usual cili padi in soy sauce, and a fragrant homemade sambal with a hint of Thai influence.
OK’s pork belly with yam might not look pretty but is absolutely delicious, with soft, fatty bits of pork, tender meat, and melt-in-your-mouth yam done just right.

The curry fish, served in a claypot, is one of their signature dishes. Spicy, fragrant, and very addictive, it is a must-order.
Being so close to the Thai border, the Thai-style tofu is another item that will not disappoint. Careful, though, as the silky beancurd is super hot when served!
Lastly, fans of bitter gourd will enjoy the version dished up here, which is intriguingly combined with bean sprouts. It’s an unlikely marriage that works surprisingly well.
Overall, lunch was pretty awesome and relatively affordable at RM72 for the whole meal.
