Uncle Soon Fried Rice: from wok to vending machine

Subang’s well-known fried rice stall was started by a couple in 1990 and has now become a family business that is fast expanding.

PETALING JAYA:
Uncle Soon Fried Rice has come a long way since it was started decades ago by a young couple in Alor Setar.

Now a firm favourite with those who work, study and live in SS15 Subang Jaya, the business has expanded to other parts of the Klang Valley as well.

And moving with the times, there are even plans to make this fried rice available in vending machines so an even larger number of customers can enjoy it.

FMT recently caught up with the present business owner, Soon Te Shian, who shared her family’s journey.

“My parents have been working as hawker chefs since they were just 22 and 23 years old. They opened Uncle Soon Fried Rice before they were even married.”

Their famous wok-hei fried rice with char siu and prawns, topped with a fried egg and sambal belacan on the side, is popular among college and university students in the vicinity.

Te Shian revealed that the famous fried rice is a secret family recipe. “My mother learnt the recipe from her aunt while working part time with her during her primary school years.”

Te Shian herself learned the recipe at age 13 when helping out at the stall after school cleaning tables and serving customers.

“My parents always hoped that I would learn to cook and carry on the family business,” she said, adding that it was an easy progression for her after completing her SPM examinations as she loved cooking, even as a young girl.

“Two years after I joined, my parents were able to retire early and I took on the business on my own,” she said.

Just like her parents, Te Shian became a business owner at a young age with her then boyfriend. The two are now married and have expanded the business by opening new outlets.

“Our goal has always been to open outlets near colleges and universities as that has been our target market since the very beginning,” she explained.

Besides opening new outlets across the Klang Valley, Te Shian’s husband has been toying with the idea of making the famous fried rice easily accessible to those on the go.

“My husband recently had the idea to put our fried rice in vending machines which would be useful for those who are in a rush.

“Customers simply choose the fried rice they want, insert the money and wait a few minutes for the fried rice to be heated and served,” she explained.

Once up and running the couple plan to place these vending machines in shopping malls as well as in colleges and universities.

With the promise of an even bigger market, what does Te Shian see in the future for Uncle Soon Fried Rice?

“I will continue to run Uncle Soon Fried Rice with the hope that our child has no interest in furthering his studies like me and my husband, and will want to take over the business,” she said with a laugh.

Besides SS15, Uncle Soon Fried Rice has outlets in Petaling Jaya, Setapak, Sri Petaling, Shah Alam and Kota Damansara.

Uncle Soon Fried Rice is also available for delivery on Grab and FoodPanda.
