“Nasi Kalut Jitra Mai”. The name itself is enough to draw your attention to this particular eatery in Shah Alam, Selangor.
“This place is bound to have some good and authentic food, right?” you’d think – and your hunch would be spot on!
As the name suggests, this makan spot serves delicious northern-style Malay food originating from a little town in Kedah called Jitra. As a rule of thumb, the further north from Kuala Lumpur you go, the spicier the food gets… and this is no exception, in a good way!
The setup here is very simple: a single stall right in front of the restaurant serving traditional Kedah yellow rice with several main dishes to choose from: fried chicken, beef, spleen, squid, chicken gizzard and liver, salted egg, ladies’ fingers, and the like.
The only option here is to “tapau” in plastic and paper, regardless of whether you bring the food home or dine in.

The fried chicken and beef sets – which come with hard-boiled egg and okra – were as fiery as they were delicious, with thick, flavourful curry with a kick. The meat was well-cooked, and the green ingredients helped to balance it all out.
At only RM25 for both, it was definitely satisfying and worth it.
So, if you’re craving some good, old-fashioned northern Malay food, this is the place to check out. As a bonus, they also have a branch in Ampang, so KL-ites don’t have to travel so far for their fill of spicy goodness!
