Malaysians love their desserts, no two ways about it. And amidst the many home baking businesses you should try is one run by a husband-and-wife team whose specialty includes delicious cakes inspired by beloved local sweet treats.

Inn and Corina started baking cakes to sell to their family and friends in 2014, and launched their home business, Whipped Cakes, the following year.

They eventually set up a kitchen in Desa Sri Hartamas, Kuala Lumpur, away from home; and, from initially offering nine flavours, grew to provide over 30 varieties of baked goods by 2019, selling them online.

The business was rebranded as Kuké Desserterie (pronounced koo-kay) in August 2020, and today, they are going strong. Their delicious cakes and goodies include those with familiar, cherished Malaysian ingredients such as pulut hitam, cendol, and gula Melaka.

Kuké’s playful flavours are unique and creative – and the best part is, you get to order by the slice, allowing you to sample a variety of cakes delivered fresh to your doorstep!

In one order, this reviewer tried seven different flavours: the Triple C, Hitam Manis, Puteri Jendol, Hunky Monky, Rasa Sayang, The Lady, and the 5 Shades of Chocolate. These are all incredibly tasty creations that will fill you with nostalgia.

The Puteri Jendol features a mix of gula Melaka and pandan sponges with cendol-redbean filling, encased in a delectable coconut whipped-cream frosting; while the Hitam Manis is a bamboo charcoal sponge cake layered with gula Melaka cream-cheese frosting and filled with homemade pulut hitam. Yum!

Meanwhile, the Triple C is a trio of coffee, carrot and cheese that somehow tastes much better than it sounds; and the Hunky Monkey is the go-to if you love salty almond and chocolate.

Lovers of citrus will fall in love with The Lady, which is a butter cake with tart lemon cream-cheese frosting, topped with pomelo sacs.

This writer’s absolute favourite was the 5 Shades of Chocolate: a blend of soft and hard, sweet and bitter chocolates, brownie chunks, and chocolate frosting – all in the same slice of heaven. What’s not to love?! If you could have this for breakfast with a cup of hot coffee, it would be a great way to start your day!

Kuké also offers a wide selection of cheese and chocolate cakes, cupcakes, and the curiously named “ambient” cakes – simple loaf cakes that have been adapted and given the Kuké touch, with rich flavours such as burnt orange maple sugee, lemon sugee butter, and blueberry musk.
